I have a deep affection and appreciation for Cape Charles. I have been connected to Cape Charles in one way or another for the past 37 years. My wife, 3 children and I first came to Cape Charles in 1987. We came here to visit my brother Jim Wells and Chris Bannon. They were partners in purchasing a rundown duplex on Tazewell Ave. The purchase price was $45,000. They were looking for some place on the East Coast near the water with potential for a growing interest for tourism. They recognized the beach, harbor and great old home architecture. They knew this was a place for growth and interest. They were going to open the first bed and breakfast in town. They started renovations with the help of some local contractors. However, after weeks and months of delays and missed deadlines, they were fired. My brother asked me if I could help him finish the renovation and I accepted. I came to Cape Charles with a small crew, and we finished renovating the B&B.
My brother passed away in 1994, now 30 years ago. I remember many of the town residents paying their respects to him. St. Charles Church was full of neighbors and friends. I was, and I am very appreciative for the outpouring of concern for my family and me. I think Jim would be happy, but not surprised, by the way the town is now. The growth has been wonderful to see. Chris Bannon managed the Seagate bed and breakfast for more than 30 years.
In 2001, I purchased land and property in Cape Charles. I renovated and rented the house to 2 full time tenants year-round.
I built a home here in 2010 and my wife and I moved to Cape Charles full time in 2018.
Today I enjoy volunteering in town, playing pickleball with friends, dining at our local restaurants, watching our beautiful sunsets, walking local trails and helping wherever I can.
I love to spend time with my grandchildren when they visit our beautiful town of Cape Charles.
